Re: Netscape 7.0.2 Release Effort Underway
In February, 2003, Netscape Communications Corp. released Netscape 7.0.2
The Netscape Product Release Team has begun testing 7.0.2 for
compatability within the MIT environment, especially with MIT
certificates and web-based applications, and with MIT web sites. Our
goal is to establish support for Netscape 7.0.2, and release MIT
installers for Macintosh and Windows, in July 2003.
IS does not recommend that MIT users upgrade to 7.0.2 until it has
been fully evaluated.

MIT Installation
----------------
The MIT installers for Netscape 7.0.2 will not be as fully customized
as previous version of Netscape for MIT. The MIT installers include
all components of Netscape as they come from the vendor: Navigator,
Mail and News, Radio@Netscape, Instant Messenger, Composer. The MIT
installers do include the MIT Certificate Authority ("site
certificate"); also, Netscape's registration process is bypassed as
part of the installation.
MIT Support for Navigator Only
------------------------------
Even though all Netscape components are included in the installation,
MIT will support only Navigator itself; no others components will be
supported.
As of June 30, 2003, MIT will no longer support Netscape Mail as an
IMAP client. For more information about MIT supported IMAP clients,
see E-mail at MIT, at http://web.mit.edu/is/help/email
MIT will discontinue support for Netscape 4.78 as of June 30, 2003.
Known Issues
----------
MathML: the fonts needed for MathML are not included with Netscape
7.0.2, and will not be included as part of the MIT installation. A
separate installer for the Math ML fonts may be created at a later
time.
Testing
------
Managers and maintainers of many MIT web sites will be testing 7.0.2
against their sites, especially those relying on MIT certificates.
Additional testing will be conducted by the Netscape Product Release
Team, the IS Computing Help Desk, and other IS staff. This testing
will include key features of the browser, compatibility with MIT
certificates, and compatibility with common plug-ins, such as
Macromedia Flash.
If you wish to evaluate Netscape 7.0.2, contact Deb Bowser at
bowser@mit.edu. If you come across issues or problems other than
those mentioned in the Netscape Release Notes, please send your
findings to testresults@mit.edu.
