Good morning,

Information Systems is excited to release VirusScan Enterprise 7.0 to the
MIT Community today. VirusScan Enterprise 7.0 is the latest version of the
popular corporate anti-virus package from Network Associates (NAI/McAfee)
and contains a number of useful new features mentioned below.

Who Should Download and Why
---------------------------------------------------
Anyone at MIT who is running Windows 2000 or XP should download and install
VirusScan Enterprise 7.0. For those still using Windows NT 4.0
Workstation, if you have a functioning version of VirusScan 4.5.1 SP1
installed we recommend that instead of uninstalling VirusScan 4.5.1 and
installing VirusScan Enterprise 7.0 you spend your time preparing to
upgrade NT 4 to 2000 or XP (NT 4.0 Workstation is scheduled for de-support
on June 30, 2003).

In today's world with viruses being sent through e-mail and infecting
vulnerable machines on the internet, it is crucial to install and maintain
up to date Anti-Virus software on your computer. Information Systems has
licensed, VirusScan Enterprise 7.0 for use on MIT owned and the personal
machines of MIT faculty, staff and students. VirusScan Enterprise 7.0
supports Windows servers and workstations.

To assist you in keeping your anti-virus software current and functional,
the Software Release Team, has pre-configured VirusScan to automatically
update the anti-virus software and virus database that it uses to detect
viruses on a daily basis. VirusScan is also pre-configured to scan all
local drives on a daily basis after the update has occurred. In addition
to maintaining current anti-virus software, it is important to apply all
security patches from vendors like Microsoft and use good passwords to
avoid having your machine compromised by hackers or infected by a virus.

Notable Features
---------------------------------------------------
- AutoUpdate now also includes (in addition to virus definitions, DATs):
         - service packs
         - hotfixes
         - engines
         - a status bar.
- AutoUpdate and Scans can be paused and continued later.
- One product supports both servers and workstations.
- Improved 3rd party compatibility.
- Faster scanning.
- Resident Memory scanning.
- Can limit the maximum CPU that VirusScan will use
- Missed tasks, such as Updates, can start automatically if machine was off
during the scheduled time

Known Issues
----------------------------------------------------
- Initial scan can take a long time, for example 35 minutes.
- Does not work on Windows 98 or ME
VirusScan Enterprise 7.0 was designed exclusively for NT, 2000 & XP
- You should uninstall previous versions of VirusScan before installing
VirusScan Enterprise 7.0

Major Pre-Configured Settings
------------------------------------------------------
- AutoUpdate scheduled for 4am*
- Scan of fixed disks scheduled for 5am*
- Delay to start missed tasks is set to 25 minutes
- Maximum CPU utilization is set to 80%

A complete list of the settings is linked from the VirusScan web pages.

* This nightly schedule was chosen as a general solution when many people
are not actively using their computer, you may wish to change the schedule
to better fit the way you use your computer.
