Subject: Windows XP Release Effort Underway
Date: Friday, 2 August 2002

Good Morning,

In February a Discovery team was formed to look at what we should focus on
in providing support for Windows XP. Based on the recommendations of that
team, we are working to release the first phase of support for Windows XP
by the end of August. During this first phase of support, IS will support
key applications on Windows XP including e-mail, backup, anti-virus, web
browsing, telnet/ssh and the MS Office Suite on clean installs and new
machines. The first phase will not include complete testing of the
enterprise applications used around campus or upgrades from previous
versions of Windows. Testing of these applications will happen in the
second phase in coordination with enterprise wide application owners and as
resources become available. We have already begun testing Windows XP with
a number of products beyond the IS Supported software based on the feedback
collected in the survey conducted by the Discovery team.

As information becomes available, we will post it to the Windows XP Release
Notebook at http://web.mit.edu/swrt/winxp/. Included in the notebook is a
Test Matrix which contains the latest results of our application testing
which includes testing as both an Administrator and a Limited User. A
variety of end user documentation is also being developed to assist clients
with using Windows XP in the MIT environment.

MIT has purchased a number of Windows XP Professional licenses that are
intended for machines that will have at least 2 more years of use at
MIT. If you are purchasing machines today, we strongly recommend that you
purchase the machines with Windows XP Professional because Windows XP Home
Edition lacks several features that are critical around the campus.

You can contact us at winxp-release@mit.edu with questions or comments
about the release.

Thanks,
Jon & the Windows XP Release Team
