Mac OS X Transition Update - June 2002
IS Support
----------------------------------------
Beginning this month, IS will be offering support for printing
set-up, network and server connectivity, and using the Mac OS X
Finder. Support includes documentation via the IS Help web pages and
IS stock answers, training courses through Training and Development,
and the ability to contact the Computing Help Desk with questions
related to printing, connectivity, and using the Finder.
Support will include the following:
Printing Set-up - Use the Printer Center to:
* add and configure AppleTalk and LPR printers
* locate and manage print jobs using the built-in Queue Manager
Network Connectivity - Connect to MITnet by these methods:
* Ethernet, using an IP address or DHCP
* AirPort for wireless connectivity
* Modem dial-up using Tether (note: AppleTalk isn't supported when
using Tether is Mac OS X)
* AppleTalk networking using Ethernet or AirPort
Server Connectivity - Connect to these servers:
* AppleShare using AFP
* Windows using SMB
Mac OS X Finder - Use it to:
* Navigate the file system
* Launch applications
* Copy or move files
* Store user files in the proper locations
Recommendation
----------------------------------------
If you need to use MIT administrative applications, authenticated
printing via KLPR, TSM backup, AppleTalk access using Tether, or if
you rely on support from Information Systems for the applications you
use, we recommend that you continue to use Mac OS 9.x.
Useful tools and Documentation
----------------------------------------
On the Mac OS X home page you'll find:
* Documentation for printer set-up, network and server connectivity.
* A chart of which applications run on Mac OS X and test results
* Useful links for end users and support providers to resources around the web.
* A list of Mac OS X events and opportunities for training.
