Subject: Netscape 6.2.3 Release to MIT

Information Systems and the Netscape Product Release Team are pleased
to announce the availability and support of Netscape 6.2.3 with MIT
customizations, for Macintosh and Windows platforms. Netscape
Navigator is the supported and recommended browser at MIT; Netscape
Mail (formerly Messenger) is the recommended IMAP client for MIT,
with limited, best-effort support.

NOTE: At this time, we know of compatibility issues between Netscape
6.2.3 and some MIT web sites. Please read the section below, "Reasons
to Not Upgrade at This Time", for more information.

On Athena, Netscape 4.78 remains the default. Work is underway to
implement Netscape 6.2.3 on the Athena system before the Fall term.

About Netscape 6.2.3 for MIT
-----------------------------
The MIT Netscape installers for both Macintosh and Windows platforms
incorporate settings pre-configured for MIT use, and include the MIT
Certificate Authority (MIT CA). For more information about 6.2.3, see
Netscape for MIT, at http://web.mit.edu/is/help/netscape.

Also included are MIT-customized Bookmarks. These Bookmarks may be
imported into existing personal Bookmarks. For instruction, see
Importing MIT Bookmarks, at
http://web.mit.edu/is/help/netscape/bkmkfiles.html.

Why Upgrade
------------------------------
-- Better overall stability and enhanced security
-- Faster browser startup and page display
-- Enhanced JavaScript support
-- Supports current web standards: HTML 4.0, XHTML, XML, Cascading
Style Sheets (CSS), Document Object Model (DOM)
-- Better integration with Windows XP
-- Native support for Mac OS X
-- Better compatibility with academic and educational technology
applications at MIT
-- New interface, with MIT Sidebar included
-- Improved online help from Netscape Corp.

Reasons to Not Upgrade at This Time
-------------------------------
A few MIT web sites are not yet fully compatible with Netscape 6.2.3.
Among these are SAPweb, parts of the MIT Libraries site (such as Ask
Us!-Live), and WebSIS. If you rely on a site which has problems with
6.2.3, we recommend that you continue to use Netscape 4.78, until a
notice is posted on the web site that 6.2.3 may be used reliably with
it.

NOTE: Because installation of 6.2.3 does not overwrite previous
versions, you may leave an earlier Netscape on your system and use it
interchangeably with the new version. You cannot run both versions at
the same time.

Remove Previous Version of Netscape
-----------------------------
When you are certain that Netscape 6.2.3 works properly with the
sites you need to access, you should remove the earlier version of
Netscape from your system. For instructions on uninstalling, go to
Removing Netscape 4.78 or Earlier Versions, at
http://web.mit.edu/is/help/netscape/478uninstall.html.

System Requirements
------------------------------
-- Macintosh: Mac OS 8.5 or later on Power PC, 64 MB RAM
(MIT supported minimum: Mac OS 8.6 or higher, on Power PC G3 or
G4, 128 MB RAM)

-- Windows: Windows 98/98SE/ME/NT/2000/XP, 64 MB RAM
(MIT supported minimum: Windows 98, NT 4.0 or 2000 Professional,
Pentium III or 4, 128 MB RAM)

Download MIT Netscape 6.2.3 Installers
-----------------------------
Go to the MIT Software Distribution page, at
http://web.mit.edu/software (certificates are NOT needed to download
Netscape).

NOTE: Due to unresolved issues around upgrading from previous
versions of Netscape, especially on the Macintosh, read the
installation instructions and the Read Me before installing 6.2.3.
