Cc: infosys@mit.edu, itag@mit.edu
Good Afternoon,
The Software Release Team is proud to announce the release of FileZilla
1.9.4.
We have been working for the past several months with members of the MIT
community to test and improve the installer, create documentation and
provide support. FileZilla 1.9.4 is the first supported Kerberized and
secure file transfer program for the Windows platform. Thus, this
release marks an important step toward providing all supported platforms
a secure means of transferring files. Prior to downloading and
installing FileZilla 1.9.4, please consider the "cautions/known issues"
noted in this note or found in the documentation at
http://mit.edu/is/help/filezilla/.
Who Should Download and Why
----------------------------------------------
FileZilla is a program used to transfer files from a Windows machine to
any other machine that supports the FTP protocol. When coupled with
Kerberos, FileZilla provides a secure way of connecting to Athena (or
any other Kerberized FTP server) servers. Thus, if you transfer files to
Athena from a Windows machine for any purpose (web site development,
research, etc), then FileZilla will be of great service.
Compatibility Issues
-------------------------------
FileZilla 1.9.4 does not work with Kerberos properly on Windows 98 and
may not work consistently on Windows XP* machines.
Features
---------------------
1. Pleasant Graphical User Interface.
2. Batch uploads and downloads.
3. Kerberos 5 Support.
4. Drag and drop files from local to remote machine.
*Please note that Windows XP is not yet supported at this time.
Caution
------------
- FileZilla doesn't work with older versions of Kerberos.
You must have Kerberos for Windows 2.1 (2.1.1 for Windows XP)
http://web.mit.edu/is/help/kerberos/ or greater to run FileZilla.
Earlier versions of Kerberos, such as "Mink 10-18-99," will not
work with FileZilla.
- Start-up errors may indicate out-of-date system files.
If you get an error message like "A required .DLL file wasn´t
found, MFC42.DLL" or "LOADER ERROR: The ordinal 6929 could not be
located in the dynamic link library MFC42.DLL" or the software crashes
on startup, you need to update your system DLLs. An
update program (FzDLLUpdate.exe) is available from:
http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/filezilla/
- FileZilla won't run behind a NAT box.
Network address translation (NAT) services can be set up to
provide multiple devices on a network with Internet access via a single
IP address. This is accomplished using a gateway
computer, called a "NAT box." NAT boxes are prohibited on MITnet but may
be in place for some MIT home users. MIT test results
have shown that FileZilla will not run properly on a
machine that is connected to the Internet via a NAT box.
Where to get FileZilla 1.9.4
---------------------------------
The installer is available from http://mit.edu/software/ as FileZilla
1.9.4.
Please review the documentation http://mit.edu/is/help/filezilla/ before
installing.
If you have a question or need assistance, please contact the Computing
Helpdesk at computing-help@mit.edu or x3-1102.
Enjoy!
Bryant
