Mac OS X Transition Update - April 2002

IS Support
----------
If you need to use your computer for MIT administrative applications
or rely on support from Information Systems for the applications you
use, we recommend that you continue to use Mac OS 9.x. If you have
technical support within your department, lab, or center, please
consult with him/her before considering any transition to Mac OS X.

Documentation Update
--------------------
Documentation is available via the newly-redesigned Mac OS X home
page at http://web.mit.edu/is/help/macos/macosx/ where you'll find
information on connecting to the network, setting up a printer, and
connecting to a server.

The chart, "What works on Mac OS X" (aka "What Runs Where") has been
reworked to conform to the IS help page format, and the columns
reordered to best answer the question, "What runs on Mac OS X?" It
is linked from the Mac OS X home page.

Recent Vendor Releases
------------------------
Since our last update, Apple released an important security patch
that you should install as soon as possible by using the Software
Update feature of Mac OS X. Apple also released Mac OS X v10.1.4
Update delivers improved networking, security, and additional disc
recording device support. So far reviews have showed no major
problems.

Last week Tivoli released IBM Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM) 5.1 for
Mac OS 9.1 and above. Initial testing on TSM has begun.

Testing
-------
Phase 1 testing by volunteers from IS and IT colleagues around MIT,
began in March and will go through the end of April. This phase
involves upgrading machines to 9.2.2 and 10.1.3, connecting to the
network, setting up a printer, and connecting to a file server, as
well as ensuring that all installers and applications running in
Classic work both independently and together.

Test results for applications running under both Classic and OS X are
summarized in a chart at:
http://web.mit.edu/is/help/macos/macosx/OSXtest/

Self-support Resources and Groups
---------------------------------
Help is available through a user-supported mailing list,
macosx-help@mit.edu. A list of other useful resources is available on
the Mac OS X web pages at
http://web.mit.edu/is/help/macos/macosx/#info.

There are many activities and groups now focusing on Mac OS X. For
details, see: http://web.mit.edu/is/help/macos/macosx/activities.html
