Good morning,

The Debathena Natty public release is currently scheduled for the night of Monday, August 8. Workstations running the "debathena-cluster" metapackage will automatically upgrade to natty. If the upgrade fails for some reason (for example, a user has left themselves logged in to the workstation), it will retry each evening until it succeeds. If you're unsure which metapackage a given workstation is running, you can query it using athinfo ("athinfo <hostname> version") or log in to the workstation and run "machtype -L".

The Athena dialup servers will not be upgraded on the evening of 8/8, but will be upgraded later this summer. A separate announcement will be sent for that upgrade.

Release notes can be found in Hermes, at <http://kb.mit.edu/confluence/x/AgBqAg>. The release notes also contain upgrade information for private workstation owners, as private workstations running the "debathena-workstation" metapackage will not be automatically upgraded.

As with all Athena releases, a downgrade is not possible without wiping and re-installing the workstation, so users who rely on Athena for their daily work and/or use software not maintained/installed by IS&T (including software installed in course lockers) are strongly encouraged to test all software and courseware on one of the cluster workstations to ensure compatibility.

Finally, the Release Team would like to acknowledge the efforts of several students involved in this summer's release effort: Elizabeth Denys ('11), Benjamin Kaduk (G) and Geoffrey Thomas (G).

Cordially,

Jonathan Reed
for the Athena Release Team
