Folks,
With my operational hat on, we use this time of the year to determine
what hardware upgrades/changes are required for the mainframe. For the
following reasons it makes sense to replace the 3827 with a 3160-2:
- print loads are down considerably to a 600-700K pg/mo load
- the monthly duty cycle for a 3160 is 750K (a practical limit is
in the 400K-500K pg/mo range); therefore, two 3160s would easily
accommodate our current load
- fixed maintenance fees as well as "click" fees are higher on
the 3827
- if we purchase the 3160 via with IBM Matching Grant credits, the
payback period in maintenance savings is ~1 year (a no brainer)
- we must spend at least $74K in credits by 5/1; the 3160-2 with
both channel & ethernet adapters costs ~$80K - nicely handling
the $74K of expiring credits
We (VM-SST & DOST) are in the midst of our annual mainframe hardware
upgrade discussions now. DOST submitted a proposal last night to
VM-SST to purchase a 3160-2 with Grant credits. A decision will be
made no later than next week. I'm currently thinking we'd simply
replace the 3827 with the 3160, and initially channel attach it just
like the 3827. If we roll out IPM, we can then use the ethernet
interface. As a reminder, the 3160-2 can handle both channel &
ethernet fed datastreams without rebooting, switching, etc.
