3 marathon peace activities:
1. for runners
2. demonstration in Brookline
3. Green-Rainbow banner at Hearbreak Hill (Newton)
PS if people want to go there with the MIT banner, might
be fun!
1. If you're running, or you know someone who's running,
get them to wear a lightweight sign (cloth is best)
that says "no war" or "peace" or whatever.
2. MARATHON DAY ACTION AT CLEVELAND CIRCLE 4/21
Local peace and justice organizations are planning to congregate at
Cleveland Circle in Brookline on Marathon Monday at 11:30 AM. The idea
is to have a large peace presence in one area, the Circle, rather than
having smaller, scattered groups that will be washed out among the
masses along the marathon route. Please bring yourself, your family,
your community, signs, banners, and enthusiasm as we hope to show an
international audience - on Patriot's Day - that Dissent is
Patriotic," and that New England opposes a widening war, the
destruction it inflicts abroad and the resources a perpetual war
economy robs from our communities.
Hope to see you there.
Working for peace and justice,
Adam Miles (AFSC)
3. Just a reminder that the Cost of War Project of the Green-Rainbow
Party has organized a stand-out demonstration for Monday, 4/21
(tomorrow!), alongside the Boston Marathon Route at Heartbreak Hill
in Newton, MA -- Grant Avenue & Commonwealth Avenue. Earlybirds to
help set up the banner: about 9 a.m., others can probably get there
as late as noon and easily find lawn space to sit on, I'm told.
The wheelchair start for the marathon is at 11:45 a.m., twenty
miles away, and takes a while to arrive at Heartbreak Hill
We will have one of Sally Stuffin's beautiful
custom-made banners with the slogan "Peace for the
Human Race." We also have a brand new comic-book
style leaflet to hand out in which Pres. Bush himself
makes a cameo, reprising Major Kong's famous cowboy
ride at the end of Dr. Strangelove. The leaflet "War
without End" proposes some non-violent alternatives
for dealing with terrorism and weapons of mass
destruction, denounces war as a means of dealing with
these problems and dictatorship and condemns the
military occupation of Iraq.
Bring your own signs and banners with peace and
anti-colonial messages fitting for this Patriot's Day
demo. Drums would also be welcome. (The dad in me
also reminds you to bring water, lunch, and sunscreen
and a picnic blanket or lawn chairs!) There is a
large grassy median at this part of Comm. Ave. and we
will be on that.
Transportation: The two nearest T-stops are Newton
Center on the Green D-line (best if you are coming
from the west and want to park at Riverside T-stop on
Rt. 128 and ride in) and Boston College on the Green
B-line.
Use www.mapquest.com with Beacon St. and Centre St.,
Newton for the Newton Center T stop to get a map to
Grant Ave. & Commonwealth Ave. (When you come out of
the Newton Centre T you are a block off of Beacon
Street, ask directions from someone there if you can't
find Beacon.) If you get off at Boston College you
have to walk away from the T-line up Commonwealth Ave.
about ten blocks. Both T-stops are probably a good 20
minute walk from Grant & Commonwealth. If you have
kids along or banners and drums, you might want to
consider driving all the way in, instead.
I am told it is not that hard to park in Newton on the
Marathon Day, so you can try driving in to the Grant
Ave. / Comm. Ave. area and parking on nearby streets.
If you are looking for or can offer a ride from the
Millers River area (Athol/Orange, etc.), give me a
call, at 978-249-0923.
Hope to see you there.
