MIT ANTI-WAR COALITION
If war is declared on Iraq, millions of people across the world will walk out
of their schools, offices and businesses in a global outpouring of protest.
Students at hundreds of universities across the US and Europe have already
signed onto this action. When MIT joins in, it could prove to be the largest
campus protest seen in decades. To be powerful, this event will depend on all
of us - more specifically: you.
---------
SUMMARY
---------
I. What you can do
II. Goals and Strategy
III. The Plan (in Detail)
--------------------
I. WHAT YOU CAN DO
--------------------
A. CAMPUS-WIDE FLYER-BOMBING: This Friday at 9 AM and Monday 9AM we will hit
every corkboard on campus to let the MIT community about the plan for a
Walkout. Several hands are needed on Deck. Contact: Claudia (claudiag.mit.edu)
B. WALKOUT PLEDGE: Mon-Wed (3/3-3/5) we need people in Lobby 10 getting people
to sign the Walkout Pledge. You will have a lot to back you up: the new t-shirt
design, factsheets, posters, buttons, cogsuits, and banners. Do it in pairs.
Contact: Stephanie (sweiwang@mit.edu)
C. FACULTY OUTREACH: We need people to talk to faculty and staff. First, we
need to get faculty involved (with their students!). Second, we need over $1500
to pull this off – and they tend to give us money. Contact: Anne
(apollock@mit.edu)
D. WEBSITE DESIGN: we will soon have the domain http://nowar.mit.edu up and
running. It will contain the pledge, the plan, updates, footnoted factsheets ,
and downloadables. We need someone to do the webdesign/html. Contact: Stephanie
(sweiwang@mit.edu)
E. RALLY PLANNING: The Walkout will be followed by a Rally. Good Speakers and
other logistics need to be arranged, also DJs and bands! contact: Anne –
apollock@mit.edu; Julia (julias@mit.edu)
F. ACCESS TO COPIERS! Do you have low-cost/no-cost access to copiers or
printers? Color would rock. Contact: Jean (Walshie@mit.edu)
G. MEDIA OUTREACH - Press releases, Faxing, Calls, etc. Contact: Jean
(walshie@mit.edu)
H. PURCHASING: If you have a car and are willing to run around picking stuff up
contact: jeff (jdu@mit.edu)
I. ROUND UP! The day of the walkout there needs to be a fleet of people who go
from classroom to classroom requesting people walk out. Volunteer now.
Contact: Stephanie (sweiwang@mit.edu)
------------------
CREATIVE TACTICS
------------------
A. PUPPET MAKING: We will be making giant protest puppets – learn directly from
an experienced 'puppetista'. Contact: Clay (clay_ward@hotmail.com)
B. BANNER REPAINTING: On Thursday evening, 3/6 we will be re-painting a the
giant 4 story “NO BLOOD FOR OIL” banner for upcoming ‘hacks’. Fun is guaranteed
– AND you will learn how to make your own huge banner. Contact: Gan
(gangolan@mit.edu)
C. COSTUMES, ETC: We will be making dozens of 'cogsuits' to project the theme
theme: “We will not be cogs in the war machine!”. Also “NOT A COG!” buttons,
stickers, and a host of other Agit-Prop Materials. Contact: Gan
(gangolan@mit.edu)
-----------------------
II. GOALS & STRATEGY
-----------------------
OUR OVER-ARCHING GOAL: To build an campus-wide MIT ANTI-WAR COALITION. All new
groups are welcomed as equal members. If you are part of a campus group,
office, or dorm that you think should be more involved – make contact!
OUR IMMEDIATE PRIORITY: Preparations for a campus-wide (1) Walkout, (2) March
and (3) Rally for when and if the war starts.
OUR STRATEGY: Once the Walkout Build-up is underway, we will shift attention to
other Anti-War events. The goal is to PREVENT THE WAR, not just wait for it to
happen. The Walkout build-up provides us a basis to mobilize.
