Hi!
As Matt said, sometimes status 4 people do run the registration
program on their own, without coming through us. If they really do
want techmail they end up contacing us so we can set a pobox, but if
they're just getting a principal and possibly setting up mail
forwarding they don't contact us. I'm not sure how many people there
are who've just done that.
There are both disadvantages and advantages to making everyone status 0
(registerable). The ones that I can think of are:
Disadvantages:
- people who have no intention of ever using athena will have full
athena accounts, that could potentially be broken into and used
- filesystems will be allocated for people who will never know they
exist
- lists will be created for people who don't need them at all
(although maybe this is the time to stop creating them for anyone; we
could put a note in various documents that say "accounts created after
Jaunary 1995 do not automatically have a group associated with them;
contact accounts@mit.edu if you need a group")
- people wouldn't be given the option at registration of setting up
mail forwarding
Advantages:
- we wouldn't have to manually set a pobox each time we do a techmail
registration
- people who want e-mail could register for it without needing to come
through user accounts at all
- we'd have a cheap solution to the not-checking-listname problem
How badly do people think that the disadvantages outweigh the
advantages?
