Accomplishments past period:
- Refined IBM software/hardware configuration with IBM Business partner.
- Took a field trip to Princeton University. They too run TSM on VM
and are about one year ahead of us in terms of migrating TSM from VM
to UNIX. We wanted to learn from their experience as we moved forward
in this project. The trip was well worth it as we gathered information
regarding sizing of hardware, software gotchas and support issues that
we will have to deal with in this migration process. Also, after
visiting Princeton, it became more evident that we need to begin the
process of moving TSM off of VM sooner rather than later due to the
amount of time and effort that will be required to complete the
migration.
- Updated TSM Discovery team on field trip.
- Briefed project sponsor, Roger Roach, on field trip to Princeton.
- Presented and discussed IBM hardware configuration with Peter Kelley.
He will provide comparable Sun Solaris configuration, as this is MIT's
recommended UNIX platform, for cost comparison.
Goals for next period:
- Finish hardware and software cost estimates.
- Identify additional implementation issues
- Develop high level implementation plan.
- Begin accessment of business plan/cost recovery issues.
Issues:
- Helpdesk may need to use command line instead of TSM GUI interface.
- Cannot export current TSM database to TSM V4 on UNIX.
Key learnings:
- Migration project will take more effort than previously thought.
- Sizing of TSM servers crucial. Don't skimp on hardware.
- More administrative overhead for TSM on UNIX than on VM.
- Allow time to practice TSM server recovery. It's different on UNIX.
- We'll probably not migrate user backup data from VM to UNIX, but
let user perfom new clean backup on new TSM Unix server(s).
- We'll need to run VM/UNIX TSM servers in parallel for some time period.
- We'll need to modify the IBM 3494 tape library.
- We'll need to provide clear intructions to users to point to new
TSM server(s).
Team dynamics:
- Good.
Additional comments:
- None at this time.
