Project Name: Advising at MIT

Report Date: 18 January 2001

Accomplishments of the past period:

     * Created interview questions for:
           - administrtators
           - faculty
           -  peer institutions
     * Interviewed about 15 administrators, some stakeholders. We are in
the process of putting notes from them in our project
      notebook on the web.
     * Compiled an Initial Wish List based on these interviews.
     * Began to identify the information/communications currently published
for advising students.
     * Identified peer institutions to survey and began preliminary surveys.
     * Met with Stakeholders to prioritize items on the Initital Wish List.
     * Met with representatives of the GSC group looking into advising.

Goals for the next period: (Note: Although the team will meet during my
absence, I will not be filing a report on 1 February so this next period is
four weeks.)

     * Complete faculty interviews.
     * Draft a short set of questions to email to new faculty.
     * Conduct interviews with peer institutions.
     * Continue to compile Wish List
     * Continue to compile list of publications.
     * Draft discussion questions for upcoming meetings with Undergraduate
and Graduate Administrators.
     * Meet with Graduate Administrators (2/14/2001).

Key Learnings/Issues:

      * Advising is an area that has been a hot button for may people for a
long period of time. Although everyone feels we could be doing a better job
at it, there are very divergent opinions about exactly wherein lie the
problems and how to go about solving them.
      * While this team will try to keep focused on the 2 questions
outlined in the charter dealing with how information technologies can
enhance the advising problem, we are going to have to be aware of the
issues that cannot be resolved with technologies and we will need to work
with the CUP group looking at advising to see that these issues are
addressed.
