Accomplishments of the past period:
* Completed variance analysis and redefined issues that remained.
* Prepared a Discussion Paper with recommendations for
advertising/sponsorship on the Web.
* Met with Karen Hersey who clarified the distinction between
advertising
and sponsorship and gave us the IRS perspective on what is taxable and
our nontaxable income in this area. Made changes to the Discussion
Paper
based on learnings.
* Prepared Discussion Paper with recommendations for Institutional
Commerce.
* Met with Jim Morgan to review both Discussion Papers and incorporated
changes based on our discussion.
* Met with Hal Abelson to discuss Advertising/Sponsorship and educational
issues.
* Drafted an MIT Privacy Policy Template to be used by merchants
along
with guidelines.
Goals for next period:
* Draft position paper on educational issues.
* Meet with Kathryn Willmore to review recommendations.
* Review recommendations with the Audit Department.
* Prepare for a presentation of our recommendations to ASPCC.
* Outline next steps.
Key Learnings:
* Our meeting with Karen Hersey really clarified the tax issues
regarding
advertising as well as the line between sponsorship and advertising. We
were able to incorporate wording from the IRS into our Discussion
Paper.
