Project Name: Higher Speed Residential Network Connectivity
Project Leader: Joanne Costello
Report Date: 22June 2000
Submitted by: Joanne Costello
Accomplishments of the past period:
* Interviewed Speakeasy
* Coordinated testing with HarvardNet
* Drafted recommendations
* Began putting together the final report
Goals for next period:
* Continue testing with HarvardNet.
* Finish the final report.
* Set up DSL line in n42 demo center (we still do not know if this
is possible)
Issues:
* We now have 11 individuals who have not qualified for a DSL
connection and only 4 who have actually been connected. Based on this and
recent articles in the press, it seems that DSL service to the home is not
ready for prime time. I do not think that we need to wait until the end of
testing with HarvardNet to write the final report. The test period will
last until 30 days after the last of the testers is connected (or
disqualified). In the meantime individuals are asking for some guidance. I
think we have enough recommendations to make at this time that would
benefit the community. One recommendation will probably be that we revisit
the DSL front in 3-6 months. Other recommendations include that MIT not be
a service provider for DSL, that we continue running tether and that we
spin off a delivery team to write the appropriate documentation.
Key Learnings:
* Certainly a key learning has been that DSL is not yet a viable
option for many people. Also the installation times and pricing currently
available will not meet most users expectations.
