Project Team Leaders Meeting
Friday June 23, 2000

Agenda:

15 min. * Review of monthly project reporting and revival of quarterly
reporting - Bob Ferrara

40 min. * Gartner Consulting services available to MIT project leaders -
Tom Abbatiello of Gartner

20 min+ * Roundtable - please contribute items at the beginning of the
meeting
------------------

1. Bob circulated the list of proposed metrics for Discovery, Delivery,
and Integration Projects. The goal was to implement metrics that are
useful, yet easy to generate. The list included:

- Count of active projects
- Count of projects completed
- Sponsor satisfaction
- Percent of majormilestones achieved (vs. planned)
- Success (completion) per cent
- Time to complete
- Size metric (small, medium, large)
- Cost

2. Thomas Abbatiello (thomas.abbatiello@gartner.com) of the Gartner Group
gave a presentation the services available from his organization. We
currently subscribe to a number of them. He walked us through their web
site (www.gartner.com) and circulated a signup sheet for those who want to
get email updates on various topics. Talk to Susan Minai-Azary if you want
access to the Gartner web site.

3. Rountable Items:

Wireless Project - Susan Minai-Azary
The Provost has approved funds for a limited wireless project on campus.
It is a limited project because technology is changing rapidly and the
number of users is growing rapidly (making it difficult to set rates just
yet). This is being done jointly with Lucent Technologies.

Forever MIT (Forever Tech, Alumni Engagement, Lifelong Learning) - Vijay
Alumni Engagement - how can we capture the resources that alumni provide
(e.g. expertise)? Bob Ferrara, and Jag Patel are involved.

Lifelong Learning - Greg Anderson and Esther Yanow involved.

Forever Tech - infrastructure to enable Alumni Engagement and Lifelong
Learning.
Enable every alum who wants it to have access to MIT resources in
perpetuity (e.g. Athena, etc). Susan and lots of Integration folks are
involved.

Overall, there is a lot of IS involvement in this!

HR/Payroll - Greg Anderson
The delivery effort is moving forward. Sponsored by John Curry, Larry
Bacow, and Bob Brown. Working sponsorship from Laura Avakian and Mary Ann
Howard.

NTIP Transaction System - Greg Anderson
The The initial discovery effort identified the need for a transaction
systems. There is a current discovery effort underway to

Environmental Health & Safety System - Rocklyn
We have looked at one vendor (EMAX / Sciquest) and are preparing to look at
another (GreenSuite) for comprehensive tracking of purchased chemicals. We
are also pursuing a "virtual environmental campus" project.

Speed - Joanne Costello
Attempting to do this as a 3 month project. They are currently working
with Harvardnet as a trial DSL provider. After submitting approx. 20 names
to Harvardnet for trial use, only a handful have been accepted. Because of
this poor result, they are considering recommending to the campus that DSL
is not yet ready for prime time. They are considering the following:

- DSL is not yet ready for prime time.
- MIT should not be a DSL service provider.
- Tether should continue.
- Perhaps we should reevaluate this in 3 months.
- We need documentation to help people work their way through high speed
access issues.

E-Commerce - Joanne Costello
This will probably not be a 3 month project. The original idea was to
provide broad guidelines for people doing E-commerce. Suzana Lisanti and
Joanne Costello has pursued a number of potential sponsors, including,
Steve Lerman. He suggested that they identify a numer of issues and funnel
them to him so that he can pass them on to the appropriate faculty. As of
now the project is in pre-discovey.

The next meeting is tentatively scheduled for Friday July 28, 2000.
