Project Name: Third Barton Project (Project to find a replacement
for the MIT LIbrary Management System)
Project Management Team: Nina Davis-Millis, Carl Jones, Joan Kolias
Report Date: May 5, 1999
URL: http:/macfadden.mit.edu:9500/c3/3dbarton

Accomplishments Past Period:
Draft Request for Solution (RFS) document was given to Eric Celeste for
review on Tuesday (5/4/99). After responding to initial feedback from Eric,
the RFS will be passed on to the MIT Libraries Steering Committee for
further comment.

Project Mgt. Team has been going over the Market Survey document. After
reviewing the material, we decided to make some format changes (each
vendor/system description will now read more as a "narrative" rather than in
section heading and bulleted list form), and fill in any informational gaps,
including updating the charts which provide a snapshot of system functionality.

The Team met informally with Kate Duvall, Sales Representative from Data
Research Associates (DRA) to talk about the progress of the TAOS system,
which will soon go "live" for the first time at UCLA.

Goals for Coming Period:
Respond to initial comments to RFS and revise. Distribute draft to Steering
Committe members prior to their next meeting at the end of May (5/26/99). We
hope to attend this meeting and hear feedback directly from Steering Committee.

Finish Market Survey Report and include recommendations of vendors to whom
we wish to submit the RFS. We believe it would be advantageous to narrow our
list
from 8 to about 5 systems, if at all possible. To aid this process, the
Project Mgt. Team plans to call a number of sites and inquire about their
experiences with specific vendors and systems.

Decide whether to attend Project Managment training session sponsored by the
Research Libraries Group in Illinois, June 4-5.

Key Learnings:
- Need better attention to details (but this is always the case, esp. when
juggling multiple tasks!)

Team Dynamics:
Morale is reasonably good, esp. with the prospect of soon turning in some
actual "deliverables" (i.e. RFS and Market Survey Report).

Issues: None
