So far I have only gotten comments back from Paul Hill and spoken with
Theresa. Please let me know if you are fine with the announcement and
plans, thinks they are the worst thing since low carb bread, or
whatever. Tomorrow morning is very soon and I'd like to be able to have
this go out with a few more voices chiming in.

I have made some changes to the text based on the comments and discussions
with Paul & Theresa.

Thanks,
Jon

Subject: Microsoft releases SP2 for Windows XP
Cc: is&t, itag
---------------------
Good morning,

Microsoft released Service Pack 2 (SP2) for Windows XP on Monday, August 9,
2004 after numerous delays and changes. SP2 represents the largest free
update for a Microsoft operating system and makes some major changes that
clients will notice immediately including a personal firewall and pop-up
blocking for IE.

Because of the size of the change, we recommend you either wait for our
recommendations or test SP2 in a test environment before deploying it to
all of your Windows XP machines. Machines configured for Automatic Update
from Microsoft (not MIT's Windows Automatic Update) will get SP2 on Monday,
August 16 unless preventative measures are taken. For more information on
ways to prevent SP2 from Automatically installing on Monday, see:

http://web.mit.edu/swrt/releases/win-xp-sp2/whattodosp2.html

Known Issues
--------------------------------
While our testing to date of SP2 has been very positive, it does make very
major changes and could cause unforeseen problems.

If you have OpenAFS installed, please read and follow the instructions at

<insert url>

before installing SP2 or your machine will hang during boot up.

Testing
--------------------------------
IS&T tested earlier versions (betas) of the service pack to ensure that MIT
services and software functioned properly with SP2 including the personal
firewall. Our testing with the pre-released versions did not indicate any
major problems, contrary to what was reported by various news agencies. We
have uncovered one major problem with OpenAFS and SP2, noted above, that
was not present in the previous versions we tested. We are actively
testing the IS&T supported applications with SP2 and will report back our
findings and recommendations within 30 days.

In the meantime, we recommend that you not install SP2 on production
machines until we make our recommendations or you are able to test your
critical applications in a test environement.

The latest information on SP2 testing at MIT including any ongoing bugs can
be found in the release notebook at

	http://web.mit.edu/swrt/releases/win-xp-sp2/

If you are testing SP2, we would appreciate hearing from you regarding your
experience with SP2, both problems encountered as well as successful
application and service usages so that we can share information broadly.

You can contact the release team with questions or feedback at
winxp-release@mit.edu.

Thanks,
Deb Bowser
