Below is the draft announcement that SWRT will send out about SP2 on
Thursday morning. We are working to update the release notebook, flesh out
the bugs, test SP2 with applications, document known issues etc. We
anticipate a quicker than 30 days conclusion to our testing and a
recommendation to go, but want to give ourselves time as we enter a very
busy time with back to school activiities.

SP2 will be forced out through Microsoft's Automatic Update on Monday,
August 16.

Please send feedback to winxp-release@mit.edu or myself by Wednesday afternoon.

Thanks,
Jon

---------------------
Good morning,

Microsoft released Service Pack 2 (SP2) for Windows XP on Monday, August 9,
2004 after numerous delays and changes. SP2 represents the largest free
update for a Microsoft operating system and makes some major changes that
clients will notice immediately including a personal firewall and pop-up
blocking for IE.

IS&T tested earlier versions (betas) of the service pack to ensure that MIT
services and software functioned appropriately with SP2 and the latest
security enhancements. Our testing with the pre-released versions did not
indicate any major problems, contrary to what many businesses found and was
reported by various news agencies. We have uncovered one major problem
with OpenAFS and SP2 that was not present in the previous versions we
tested. We are actively working on testing the IS&T supported applications
with released version of SP2 and will report back our findings and
recommendations within 30 days.

In the meantime, we recommend that you not install SP2 on production
machines until we have concluded our testing or you are able to test your
critical applications on a test system. Microsoft will make SP2 available
through Automatic Update on August 16, so if your machine is configured to
take updates directly from Microsoft you will get SP2 on Monday. We
recommend you configure your machines to use the MIT's Windows Automatic
Update Service

	http://web.mit.edu/ist/topics/windows/updates/

where we will have more time to test and ensure that critical applications
function with SP2.

The latest information on SP2 testing at MIT including any ongoing bugs can
be found in the release notebook at

	http://web.mit.edu/swrt/releases/win-xp-sp2/

If you are testing SP2, we would appreciate hearing from you regarding your
experience with SP2, both problems encountered as well as successful
application and service usages.

You can contact the release team with questions or feedback at
winxp-release@mit.edu.

Thanks,
Deb Bowser
