As Joe pointed out below, this issue was nothing specific to win.mit.edu. 
Does computing-help automatically forgo any troubleshooting on a machine by 
it's virtue of being in win.mit.edu?

I haven't heard of this exact problem happening in the Win.Mit.Edu domain
before, but Microsoft does seem to have a Knowledge Base article about the
symptoms you've described:

If that doesn't help, let us know and we'll try to collect more detailed
information about the case.
