There are several things called REX, including the Rexx Bob Oesterlin
mentioned. I suspect the one the original query referred to was the
Remote EXecution protocol (Tannenbaum?) The answer isn't too far from
the truth - they aren't related.
It should also be noted that Rx is not Transarc's "private" RPC in the
strictest meaning of the word - the Rx implementation was granted by IBM
under a Berkeley-style copyright. Transarc currently has a DARPA
contract to provide more detailed specs about Rx (last I checked we
planned on submitting it to the RFC editor for publication as soon as it
was ready) and plans on bundling a 2nd distribution of Rx. Of course,
this could have changed since last week.
