at umich, our servers are spread over hell and back; as far as file
service is concerned, it doesn't make much difference. for example,
the server that i use is for experiments is right across the hall from
my office, and while i bring up new instances of fileserver regularly,
i never have to visit the room. in fact, i build and install servers
from home without a hitch.
so, aside from ordinary system administration issues (physical security,
perioidic maintencance), there's no particular advantage to co-locating
servers, nor any real disadvantage, either, unless you put them very
"far" away from the clients.
actually, it might be handy to have a little more structure, so that you
could force requests to a go to a "close" server.
