Accomplishments in August 2002:
Bldg. 24=92s switching cabinets & cables were slid into place while working=
=20
(e.g. providing dial tone) on Friday July 12th. Cables were all shortened=
=20
and cut back on the frame during the week of the 15th (all work took place=
=20
after hours). Also the Vesda systems were temporarily taken off line=20
during the =93Hot Slide=94 to provide for additional drilling to permanently=
=20
anchor cabinets into their new location within the room.
NW12=92s switching cabinets & cables were slid (moving live equipment into a=
=20
permanent location) on July 19th. All cables were shortened and cut back=20
on the frame during the week of 22nd.
The removal of all old 5ESS cabinets was completed prior to the =93Hot=
Slide.=94
The E19 (host site) =93Hot Slide=94 took place on Friday 26th. Cables were=
=20
shortened and cut back the following two weeks (8/9/02).
The Vesda system was taken off line again within NW12 and E19 the week of=20
8/26/02).
The MDF=92s had hardware modifications installed after the =93Hot Slide=94=
for=20
better wire provisioning.
All W89 blocks were re-stenciled and verified and problems traced to the=20
Switching Modules.
Two A/C problems were addressed in NW12 leaking was visible while in E19 we=
=20
lost one of the units due to mechanical malfunctions and are awaiting=20
parts. Also in E19 the filter in the modem pool was replaced to stop=20
leakage into the switchroom and hallway.
Parts have been ordered by Lucent to replace missing or damaged items from=
=20
our spares surplus (e.g. circuit paks) and faulty workstation=20
cables. Expect delivery within 10 days.
Minor adjustments to the DDM 2000 equipment at all three locations were=20
made to provide better alarm states as well as assist the remote monitoring=
=20
team in identifying minor to critical situations.
We continue to have minor anomalies with ICE 9 but, they are not effecting=
=20
the completion of Service Orders (SO) or repairs. Jana is heading the=20
modifications and is doing an excellent job working with our off site=20
consultant. We are operating normally.
Lucent has cleaned all tools and materials out of 24 and NW12. E19 is 98%=
=20
complete. We expect Lucent on site only until Friday, 9/6/02.
A walk thru and acceptance procedure took place on Tuesday 9/3/02. MIT=20
signed Lucent acceptance agreement with the understanding that the items=20
added as outstanding will still be addressed by Lucent in a timely=20
manner. Minor items like the replacement of a tab to disengage a shelf was=
=20
broken on one side, a pack was inoperable, etc.
We will have one more meeting to wrap up this project with Lucent=20
Management that will take place on September 18, 2002.
We negotiated and got a =93replacement=94 spares and exchange program=
through=20
Lucent for at least a year at no additional costs to MIT.
Joni=92s tenacious abilities to get MIT additional DID numbers without=
having=20
to create a new dialing plan proved successful. She found a reserve of=20
numbers via AT&T and immediately had them available in a short period of=20
days. Thanks!
Next Month=92s plan:
Redesign E19=92s switchroom, including surrounding offices and=20
equipment that had been moved prior to the start of this project. This=
=20
will include the addition of 4 new staff members and possible 4 new=
=20
contracted members. This design process will occur in conjunction=20
with Christine Cavanna (I/S Space Planning) and encompass all TNS staff=20
in E19.
Continue to explore strategies related to the 5ESS, ACD, ICE 9,=20
VOIP, IVR and other applications.
To schedule 5ESS training for the Operations team and=20
technician.5E architecture, maintenance, translations, DDM 2000 and=20
other newly installed equipment).
Provide training to the 5E Support and Operator Services=92 team.
Note: This hot slide has never been performed elsewhere. There are=20
service effecting risks associated with this hot slide given we have over=20
22,000 lines and more than 2,000 trunks in service. Therefore, we have=20
planned to perform one switch site at a time and to start with the least=20
complicated and end with the most critical switch site.
Issues:
=B7 The challenges with performing a Hot Slide:
1. No one had ever performed a Hot Slide of this magnitude before.
2. All switchrooms had massive cable lengths to accommodate the=20
temporary locations that the 5E cabinets were installed prior to=20
cutover. These heavy cables had to move at the same rate of the sliding of=
=20
the equipment. The average weight of these cables being held and moved by=
=20
Lucent ranged from 200 300lbs.
3. In the Bldg 24 switchroom, the additional challenge was the limited=
=20
amount of clearance to the ceiling when moving the switching cabinets and=20
the cables. This room has a lot of activity such as the steam pipes that=20
run the length of the ceiling.
4. In the NW12 switchroom, the additional challenge was to move the=20
main power grid and its equipment while also sliding the cabinets. The=20
power equipment was not installed in its permanent location 10 months ago=20
due to the vulnerability of the floor to handle the weight load of this and=
=20
the 5E equipment (old and new).
5. The host location (E19=92s switchroom) was a more tedious and=20
detailed slide since it houses the main frame of the 5E, the trunks to and=
=20
from our local, long distance & int=92l vendors as well as
Dynamics:
Those who joined us during the E19 slide were amazed by the=20
complexity and enormity of moving the equipment, the frames, and the=20
cables. The team was pleased to have I/S visitors present. Their=20
appreciation of performing the Hot Slide without any service effecting=20
outages was very much appreciated. Thank you!
Key Learnings:
Lucent has recently acknowledged the significance of MIT=92s=20
foresight into modifying some of the 5E configuration before the equipment=
=20
was delivered. We strongly influenced changes at no cost to MIT on many=20
items before our equipment left the factory floor. Therefore, we=20
positioned the new 5ESS-2000 in a ready state for new and upcoming=
technology.
Pleasure in the job put perfection in the work.
Aristotle
We owe our success to having listened respectfully to Lucent=92s very best=
=20
advice, and then going away and doing the exact opposite.
Thanks,
Lu
