* NOTE: E19=92s SM21 is not being verified. This SM2K will become part of=
=20
the new switch on cut over.
% Special circuits continued to be cross wired. Progress is as=
follows:
Special Circuits: 431 modem pool lines compete and 100%=
accurate
(100% complete) 100 voice mail lines complete and accurate
203 misc. modems, alarms, etc to be=20
completed by 4/30/02
% The equipment for EXM6 is in place in the =93holding room=94 across=
=20
from the 24 switch room=85 It is 50% complete. The cabling to the=20
power plant is complete and the jumpers are being placed in their temporary=
=20
positions until after the old equipment is removed from the 24=20
switchroom. Our expectations are that this SM will be 100% complete before=
=20
cutover and prepared for the hot slide when we accept the new=20
switch. This should expedite growth capabilities within 30 days=20
of cutover.
% The 5ESS Team continues to randomly validate the cable/pair records=
=20
and Lucent=92s frame verification sheets for accuracy on all three=
=20
switching frames. We are running close to 98% accurate (of the things we=20
can know)=85 The cutover could result in unexpected service outages. We=
=20
are trying to pro actively remove all known obstacles and have a plan in=20
place for the unplanned should they occur..
% The validity checks on the MDF=92s vs. the ICE 9 database:
o NW12 is 100% up-to-date and as accurate as the database
o 24 is 98% up-to-date and as accurate as the database
o E19 is 96% complete and accurate. MIT found all inaccuracies and=20
presented a running list to Lucent. MIT performed tracing and spreadsheets=
=20
for Lucent. These spreadsheets assisted Lucent in becoming closer to 100%=
=20
accurate in all 3 switch sites. The running sheets are analyzed daily by=20
Steve Morris and updated into ICE 9 by Annette Smith. Thank you Steve for=
=20
being so meticulous and focused and assisting Lucent with this process (we=
=20
would not be 100% otherwise). Thanks to Annette we have had ICE 9 updated=
=20
faster then Lucent performed all of these changes=85 Thanks!
% Continue to update cable and pairs found within frame verification=
=20
and day-to-day repair changes. (Approximately 5 - 10 cable/pair changes=20
per day).
% Continue to trace anomalies and update spreadsheets and databases=20
(ongoing until cutover)
% Continue to oversee all telephone moves, adds, changes and trouble=
=20
tickets. Mapping and updating the 5E database with cable and pair=20
changes in chronological order (for a more accurate database at cut=20
over). Lucent has caught up to the daily MAC=92s and the database is=
now=20
in sync and service orders will not be written during the =93freeze=94=
period=20
(starting Friday, May 10, 2002).
% Established visibility with our Remote monitoring maintenance=20
center (they are currently watching both switches.
% Recorded all announcement (e.g the number you dial at MIT is not in=
=20
service), on the 5ESS and loaded them into the 16RA. Precut testing=20
of these recordings went well.
% Continue testing ICE 9=92s new database and prepare for cut over.
% ISDN conversion from the E19 switch room continues. This work is=20
service affecting therefore 3-down is updated daily and most of the=20
work takes place after hours. The remaining testing on ISDN is=20
troubleshooting known anomalies.
% The testing of ICE 9 continues as modifications of the ICE 9 code=20
are changed. Newest issue is LCC change updates all records and reassigns=
=20
all current equipment on the 5ESS.
% Worked on the billing issues in which we dumped the calling data=20
from the new switch (after dialing all types of calls). The old switch=20
used 9mm tapes and the new switch uses dat tapes. We were successful in=20
having the data loaded onto the dat tape, but reading it was impossible=
=20
(aside from the headings). Worked with Lucent and resolved this issue on=20
5/10/02. thank you mad dog Cyr for staying on Lucent with this and=20
Jana for doing all possible testing of the dat tape here and at W91.
% The ACD was removed from the Classic 5ESS system and installed on=20
the new 5ESS (after hours) and although this took two nights on=20
troubleshooting, the test work successfully. Thank you Mary Ziegler and=20
your team for making this test possible and for assisting us in the=20
testing.
% Clean-up of ISDN lines continues. Some old Multiline hunt groups=20
have been found and removed.
% Testing of analog is almost complete (all old services are complete=
=20
and MAC=92s are very close to being complete).
% The Plan for U-A to U-B conversion for NW12 and 24 are being shared=
=20
with the appropriate customers. Most of this work can start on Friday=20
5/24 but will not be completed until Saturday 5/25. Steve, Collin and Dave=
=20
will be completing this work on cutover weekend.
% Tina Sands had obtained all the necessary equipment and=20
preparations needed for this cutover (e.g. spare cell=20
phones, walkie-talkies, food, NT1=92s, etc=85). Thank you Tina for an=20
outstanding job. Working with you is a pleasure. It is nice to have=20
someone who is thorough, skillful and competent. Thank you.
% Nate has completed a document detailing the =93MAC=92s moratorium=94=
and=20
it has been distributed. All feedback to date from customers have been=20
positive. They are appreciative of the details surrounding the moratorium=
=20
as well as getting this information in a timely manner.
% Notification has been updated and distributed via Tech Talk, IS=20
Newsletter, Spotlight and the website. Thank you Robyn Fizz and=20
Lee Ridgeway.
% Notification to our vendors has begun. AT&T, Qwest, PaeTec are=20
aware of the cutover, Verizon is still being worked on. We will=20
also notify customers running from PBX=92s and/or our Tie line connections=
=20
before 5/24/02.
% Setup a procedure for =93help=94 calls to be completed before=
cutover=20
and also to have data modifications completed in all databases.
% Testing of new features is being completed. Joni will work with=20
the volunteer crew to orient them with the lengthy testing procedure=20
(we will test features, routing, call restrictions, voice mail, ACD,=20
operator services, just to name a few). This should provide a more=20
efficient feature testing on 5/25/02.
% Plans to work the Memorial Day weekend have been established. The=
=20
command Center has been setup and the TL will provide process and=20
strategy with volunteers for that weekend (5/16/02). Campus Police and=20
Medical have been supplied 3 cell phones each incase of an=20
emergency. We have them set up in a critical path and do not expect=20
problems. If there are problems, we will know before they will and=20
will be on site immediately.
CUTOVER
=B7 Print out office records of classic 5ESS (snap=20
shot) doing for one full week before cutover and during=20
the day on the 24th.
=B7 Setup off campus audio bridge to regroup and discuss any=
=20
outstanding issues. This call will include, 5ESS engineers,=20
specialists, the installation team, the Implementation, software experts,=20
and the MIT team.
=B7 Cut over begins at 6pm and is expected to be complete=20
with phase one at 1a.m.
* Transfer all telephone services from old to new switch; bring new=20
switch on line, accept phase one process and bring the old off line=20
(the database will be available if information is needed).
* Bring the new ICE 9 database on line. Test, write TT & SO=92s.
* All current ISDN users on the classic 5ESS have to have their cards=20
physically receded. Scripts have been written for the night of cutover to=
=20
shut off the shelves these cards sit on. If the software modifications=20
don't fix this bug, then we will need to recede all equipment served by the=
=20
ISLU in all three switch locations. We are writing up a procedure to=20
perform this efficiently and effectively.
* Saturday 8am through Tuesday at 6am
=A7 Managing the help desk and providing records from=
=20
ICE 9 for corrections
=A7 Testing of all new and old features
=A7 Testing the routing from all three switch rooms
=A7 Performing Operator functions (testing of=20
switchboards, features, IVR, Audio Conference bridge, etc.)
=A7 Tracing and Re-cross wiring cable and pairs
=A7 Changing old U-A cards in the center of Campus=20
with U-B cards
=A7 Updating the community via 3-down and emails
=A7 Testing Voice mail, ACD, Modem pool, video=20
conferencing, etc.
=A7 Troubleshooting in all areas (power, cable, oe=20
assignments, ICE-9, etc.)
=A7 Testing Recorded announcements, Audio bridge,
=A7 Etc. An implementation plan will be documented=
=20
prior to cut over.
% Our 5ESS Database is approximately 99% built and being verified=20
(e.g. NNX=92s, OE=92s, TN=92s, Trunks, Routing, etc.).
% Meet with Lucent every Thursday in E19-732 and some Lucent=20
employees via a conference call.
% Meeting with Lucent Management one Wednesday a month or as needed.
% Providing Lucent with information that is needed for the new 5ESS=20
(e.g. software releases, bmw=92s, etc.)
% Resolving any issues that arise during this project. Directing=20
Lucent through the modifications (most recent is creating a script that=
=20
will assist us the night of cutover and save us hours of work). Thank you=
=20
Artie for writing a procedure for our maintenance folks and for staying=
=20
focused on resolving this issue with Lucent).
% Amis terminals installed in E19, additional terminals are=20
forthcoming for E19, 24 and NW12. Tested ok.
% Consulted VDIST on the wiring frame for the location of the demarc=
=20
for the new dorms (in the NW12 switch room). Providing the=20
installation of the MDF equipment that is needed to extend the frame. We=20
will also have this complete before 5/21/02.
% Testing was completed off-hours on the integration equipment (3A=20
Translator) to the VMail System. This test required hardware=20
modifications which made the =93integration=94 of the voice mail inoperable=
=20
for under an hour however, the test proved successful.
% Completed the telephone setup in all three sites for pre and post=20
cut over. Had to re-do this since Lucent had accidentally deleted the=20
details on the phone as well as removed the features for testing.
Next Month=92s plans:
=B7 Setup intercom network for the switchrooms.
=B7 Complete the "re-verification" all cross connects on SO and=
repairs=20
that have taken place since January to test for accuracy on jumpers.
=B7 Continue to perform troubles on the existing 5ESS as well as a=20
mirror change on the new 5ESS.
=B7 Meet with volunteers and talk about the implementation and cutover=
=20
plans.
=B7 Continue preparation for adjunct systems (e.g. voice mail ACD,=
IVR,=20
modem pool, etc)
=B7 Complete the building of the access codes for new remote features=
=20
and begin testing.
=B7 Investigate the setup of the music recorded announcement feature.
=B7 Complete the moving of analog trunks over to new switch and report=
=20
procedure for the night of cut over (2002)
=B7 Continue with test plans (begin testing the existing 5ESS for=20
features, capabilities modifying documentation for accuracy. Test plan=
=20
to be used on the new 5ESS switch with additional features and higher=20
release of software.
=B7 Continue to work with the volunteers at the test telephone banks=
to=20
perform the test procedures at least 3 times before cut is complete.
=B7 Continue tracing all special software configurations, links and=20
other misc. equipment running off of the 5ESS
=B7 Move all trunks over to new DSX panel (off hours required) (night=
=20
of cut over)
=B7 Load all Switch Modules with current database, compare databases=
=20
until cut over
=B7 Perform dumps of new 5ESS OE=92s for new ICE 9 database
=B7 Install TTY and AMIS terminals for cut over
=B7 Discuss the cut over plan and strategy for the different teams=20
working.
=B7 Work with CSR=92s, Operators and the telephone help desk to=
address=20
any anomalies and create a command center for cut over.
=B7 Test video after trunks are cutover and verify their abilities to=
=20
hook up.
=B7 CUTOVER to the new 5ESS on 5/24 5/27
Issues:
The biggest challenge this month is the demands outside of this project=20
that are requiring additional time and effort from the 5E Ops team. All=20
demands are important, but they are taking a toll on the team, especially=20
as we get closer to the 5/24/02. The team really needs to remain fully=20
focused on the cutover, for it to be successful, especially since we have=20
only a few more weeks.
We had a few technical issues with the recorded announcement module, the=20
ACD equipment, the billing data and some software issues but all have been=
=20
resolved.
We had taken the entire ACD network (N42 Help Desk) off of the old classic=
=20
5ESS and placed them on the new switch. The transition was smooth and the=
=20
results were excellent. Again, thank you Mary Ziegler for assisting us in=
=20
doing this.
Team Dynamics:
The 5E team continues to give all they have to provide for a successful cut=
=20
over. We definitely have a very accomplished team and I'm very proud to=20
work with each member.
The 5ESS Operations team is investigating and finding anomalies with the=20
new 5ESS system (e.g. cable/pair to traces). MIT is then assisting and=20
providing consultation to Lucent on the resolutions and record modification.
Their efforts, drive, skills, and determination are making this project=20
appear to the outside world as simple though in reality it=92s very=20
complex. This team is doing an outstanding job which will be visible=20
during the cut over period.
Key Learnings:
I feel very fortunate to be working with the unique individuals that make=20
up 5ESS team. They, as individuals and as a whole are amazingly clever,=20
ambitious, motivated, and sincere. They will all be the reason this=20
project is successful.

<br>
<u>Issues:<br>
</u></b>
<dl>
<dd>The biggest challenge this month is the demands outside of this project=
that are requiring additional time and effort from the 5E Ops team. =
All demands are important, but they are taking a toll on the team,=
especially as we get closer to the 5/24/02. The team really needs to=
remain fully focused on the cutover, for it to be successful, especially=
since we have only a few more weeks. <br>
<br>
<dd>We had a few technical issues with the recorded announcement module, the=
ACD equipment, the billing data and some software issues but all have been=
resolved. <br>
<br>
<dd>We had taken the entire ACD network (N42 Help Desk) off of the old=
classic 5ESS and placed them on the new switch. The transition was=
smooth and the results were excellent. Again, thank you Mary Ziegler=
for assisting us in doing this.<br>
<br>
<br>
<br>
</dl><b><u>Team Dynamics:</u> <br>
<br>
</b>The 5E team continues to give all they have to provide for a successful=
cut over. We definitely have a very accomplished team and I'm very=
proud to work with each member.<br>
<br>
The 5ESS Operations team is investigating and finding anomalies with the new=
5ESS system (e.g. cable/pair to traces). MIT is then assisting and=
providing consultation to Lucent on the resolutions and record=
modification. <br>
<br>
Their efforts, drive, skills, and determination are making this project=
appear to the outside world as simple though in reality it=92s very=
complex. This team is doing an outstanding job which will be visible=
during the cut over period.

<dd>I feel very fortunate to be working with the unique individuals that=
