Project Name: Windows 2000 Domains, Workgroups, and Servers Delivery Project
Project Leader: Kerem B. Limon
Report Date: May 9, 2003 (for April 2003)
Project Web site URL: http://web.mit.edu/windows-delivery/
Accomplishments in April:
- The DART process verification is ongoing--we've been speaking with CAO,
as well as monitoring the design consulting work being done with PLC and
Facilities by Dell Professional Services (DPS). NRL and OSP are in the
pipeline, with DART scheduled to officially open for business end of
May/beginning of June.
- Microsoft & Dell exploratory design (and implementation) projects have
commenced for the PLC and Facilities. We have an on--site consultant from
DPS residing in W92, and he reports to Kerem on a daily basis, as well as
leading ongoing work with the DLCs. With regards to these pilots:
o PLC and Facilities have each met at least twice with the DPS consultant.
o PLC has obtained their DNS subdomain and currently have a test domain
deployed for testing, so implementation work is moving forward as well as
design.
o Facilities design has begun their design work.
- Delivery Team has begun partial testing of win.mit.edu and independent
domain implementations, to assist in documentation generation/verification.
We have sample win.mit.edu Containers, with which we are testing
workstations and a server, as well as a temporary DNS subdomain for
independent domain setup/getting-started guidance and compatibility testing
only.
- Sent out End-of-April community announcement detailing DART developments,
the launch of the Dell/Microsoft efforts, updates on win.mit.edu pilots,
new DNS subdomain delegation process from Network Operations for
independent Windows 2000 domains, and a brief statement on the release of
Windows Server 2003 (formerly .NET Server/.NET Server 2003) (05/09).
- Mike Sherman of the Delivery Team and DART presented the DART process and
project updates at the ITPartners Spring half day conference. Having a DLC
representative presenting on behalf of the Delivery Team was well-received.
- Begun documentation editing and publication process. Expect to see
documentation roll-out during the course of May, shooting for a complete
version 1.0-level coverage of all relevant design, implementation,
training, and support topics by July 1. If you are interested in receiving
frequent updates on this, please contact windows-delivery-request@mit.edu.
- (Team leader) met with director of Support and Support Strategy Planning
Team to present a first-draft support plan. This plan will be available in
paper/electronic draft format shortly. Please contact Kerem if you are
interested in details.
Goals for May:
- Complete DART process verification and open DART for business (end of
May/beginning of June).
- Upload bulk of existing documentation in edited format to Web. (FYI--We
have a detailed outline for this work, which is approximately 50% covered
by existing documentation in win.mit.edu spaces and documentation developed
in the last several months; another 25% or so is in production at the
moment. We are aiming to have most all existing documentation phased in
on-line within the next 3 - 4 weeks while the remainder which is currently
in production, is delivered.)
- Continue revising independent domain instructions/information
white-paper--now that the DNS subdomain issues are resolved, the obstacles
are cleared, and also upload to Web.
- Conduct internal DART pilots with NRL, OSP to verify DART process and
develop standard templates based on these DLCs. CAO, Facilities, PLC begun
and progressing.
- Conduct internal testing to revise existing or develop missing
documentation for win.mit.edu and independent domains. This continues, and
is useful in developing a lot of quick-start and FAQ-type input to
documentation.
- Continue populating the DLC customer database for DART use--this will
continue to go on as DART processes customers. (This begun, with regular
updates going to the sponsors/advisory group.)
- Continue front-line Support team preparations (Help Desk, etc.) and
id/development of tools needed as part of support plan.
Next Community Milestone:
- Official opening of DART, and beginning to consult with customers (ca.
05/31).
- End-of-May community announcement (ca. 05/31).
and internally
- first-draft support plan (this week)
- second-draft support plan (ca. 05/31)
Issues:
- As for decision making around the next round of pilots/implementations,
we have reached a stable point with each sponsor having identified the next
round of migrations. With DART opening later this month, this will no
longer be as much a concern as sponsor input and scheduling is incorporated
into the overall DART process. Additionally, the growing DART database is
very useful for this purpose.
Key Learnings:
- DART process so far appears reasonable. We will have good data points in
a week to finalize any tweaking, and are still aiming to go into production
with DART end of May/early June.
- [from last report, still stands] The next 3 months are going to be the
busiest, with many parallel components of the project being delivered.
Team Dynamics:
- So far so good. However; we have had someone have to draw back from DART
due to changes in their workplace and increased workload; unfortunately,
this person was a DLC representative, and while the individual remains
affiliated with the Delivery effort through July 1, we need to replace the
seat in DART with another DLC rep. We would appreciate any suggestions as
we continue to search and try to identify a suitable replacement.
Additional Comments:
None.
