I just wanted to point out that this whole issue of racy images really
doesn't have a lot to do with unsuspecting innocents. GIFs don't just
pop up on your screen while you wander the Internet. Even if a child
accidentally types "rn alt.binaries.pictures.erotica", she's only going
to see something like:

It takes a bit of knowledge and motivation to uudecode the image and
then download it to her local machine and then run a GIF viewing program.
If you're worried about protecting unsuspecting innocents, the real
problem is cases like have been mentioned here, where jerks email
inappropriate textual material directly to children or their mailing lists.
And that's going to be REAL hard to prevent.
