Ok, Gordon Cook has asked me in private e-mail about something called an NSR
report. These are technical blurbs that talk about the status of the various
networks attached to ANS as well as the backbone. Status, updates, and failures
are all e-mail out to various sources. Gordon has asked for and been denied
access to this information. I don't understand why ANS would deny you access
to these reports. They show that problems do in fact happen. MCI has had some
of its worst fiber outages in the companies history this fall. Several T-3
circuits in 3 locations were cut causing not only ANS but, many MCI subs to
lose their services. Gordon, you did not ask if ANS has a deal with MCI to
supply T-3 backup in case of such a failure. One would think as important
and Mr. Ittai thinks the Internet & its users/customers are , such a backup
would exist. Well people it does not. In many cases a circuit can be out for
hours and sometimes days. My experience with MCI technical people has never
impressed me. Maybe thats what they do not want you to see Gordon. At any rate,
you said you were told only ANS customers got such info - FALSE - PSI & Alternet
as well as Sprint and many others get the NSR reports. Its very standard on
a network of any size. I saw AT&T lose 100 T-3 circuits, their software
detected and re-routed the calls in about 2 seconds. You just have to be
big enough and care enough to have the capacity in place.
>>> Ask for the id cook@path.net to be added to the NSR list - If ANS or Merit
deny you , write your state Rep. and the people in D.C. & cc: a copy of the
letter to Al Gore. You should be entitled to the info. because the two groups,
Merit & ANS handle a non-classified network using gov't funds. If ANS says it
will damage their business for you to be on the list, don't buy into it. They
can't be commercial & non-commercial depending on which way the wind blows.
It sounds to me like alot of these people don't work and play well together.:
