I hit the space bar - nothing happened. I hit about 20
different keys, to make sure it wasn't just that the space bar had
   failed. Still nothing happened.

What was being displayed when this occurred? Was it the screensaver
screen with an X logo, or the black screen with "Welcome to Project
Athena", or the login window, or what?

Also, did you try hitting one of the mouse buttons in addition to keys
on the keyboard?

I rebooted the machine. While watching the reboot, it said
that the time was off by more than 4 days..

This is normal.

   It also found and
corrected several errors while doing fsck, and rebooted itself.

This is also normal after a forced reboot.

   The
second time through fsck it found and corrected at least 2 more
   errors.

This is also normal.

It rebooted twice, because the first time it found errors on the root
filesystem, and it has to reboot immediately after fixing errors in
the root filesystem (so that the kernel doesn't write any disk buffers
back to the disk and in the process erase the fixes that fsck has just
made).
