rlogin by default will use ^S/^Q for flow control. On athena systems,
see the -noflow option; on non-athenaized rlogin's check out -8.

Sounds like some lossage I saw before... try a 'stty tabs' on ALL
systems which emit terminal info into that window (i.e. both sol &
venus), then start emacs and see if the problem persists.
[When emacs prints a ^I and the terminal driver converts that to <SPC>*,
bad things happen.]
