I've recently discovered what possibly is a bug with compress. If you
tell it to compress a file to which you have read access but not write
access, it will go through the entire process of performing the
compression, *then* realize that it can't write the compressed
temporary file over the original and give you an error. This would
not be so bad if it weren't for the fact that it leaves the compressed
file UID "nobody", which means that you can't delete it.
