Check spelling.
What's wrong:
Pine's default spell checker is pretty terrible.
What should have happened:
Pine should invoke aspell. The default pinerc can be
edited to include the line:
speller=/usr/athena/bin/aspell -c
and then pine will run aspell, which can do things like
suggest possible spellings, which pine can't do.
