Hi.
Thanks for your bug report. You are correct; the problem occurs
because the new shell is a child of the gnome-terminal process
started at login, so that this environment set-up code is executed,
although gnome-terminal sets the new process' current directory
to that of the launching process. This invalidates the assumption
made by the set-up code that the current directory is always the
user's home directory.
I have submitted a bashrc patch to fix this; the fix should appear
in a future patch release.
