What were you trying to do?
run a perl script which has been used for years

What's wrong:
I traced it down to the size of the file written to /tmp/

This script results in a 0 length /tmp/bad and a 7168 byte /tmp/good

#!/usr/athena/bin/perl

open(DATA, "> /tmp/bad")|| die "couldn't open tmp data file: $!";
print DATA "1" x 7169;
close(DATA);
open(DATA2, "> /tmp/good")|| die "couldn't open tmp data file: $!";
print DATA2 "1" x 7168;
close(DATA2);
