That's presumably because "." is the path separator on this IMAP server.

I can see how this is annoying to you, but I don't think it constitutes
a bug.  Every component of the system is acting as it ought to, although
I suppose there's an argument to be made that pine ought to encode
periods in the from address when converting it to a folder name.
