The mail server seems to have a bug that makes it flip out if you try to
give a mail folder a name with a period in it. This arises, for example,
if in pine you choose by-from as your saved-msg-name-rule (a very handy
way to automate the organization of your mail folders), because many
e-mail addresses contain periods, e.g. firstname.lastname@hotmail.com.
I've never had this problem on countless other machines I've used pine on,
where it happily makes a file called firstname.lastname on the local disk.
But here it will make a directory called firstname, with the mail folder
called lastname inside it. After that pine can't open the directory called
firstname anymore, and you've lost your mail (although you can still
access it with webmail or evolution or even--if you're lucky--eudora).
