If your X server is properly configured, you should not have a limited
color map.
Try running (as root, from a console login):
mv /etc/X11/XF86Config /etc/X11/XF86Config.aside
redhat-config-xfree86
Then select 1280x1024 (or something else, if you really want) and
"millions of colors", and click ok.
