I don't totally understand what all went wrong with your dotfiles. I
suggest running:
gconftool-2 --shutdown
mv ~/.gconf ~/.gconf.aside
mv ~/.gnome2 ~/.gnome2.aside
and then logging out and logging back in. If that doesn't work, then
something is wrong beyond what I currently know about.
