this seems to be a known problem on RH9- apparently many man pages
fail in the same way ("man fontconfig" for example). See RedHat
Bugzilla bug 88148 at
http://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=88148
They say it's been resolved but it's not clear to me what the fix
is exactly.
