Incidentally, I saw the same symptom on my laptop with images.google.com
a couple of days ago, but didn't find out anything about it.
You might have been able to dump the database by gdb attaching to the
process. But I have no objection to creating an rndc key file. (At
this particular moment I'm tied up in higher-profile bugs; patches
welcome.)
