FTR, following private communication, I logged in on wally and
finally found the cause of the problem -- there was an existing
/usr/athena/lib/mozilla/components/compreg.dat (mozilla's
component registry file), which had apparently been created
when the previous version of mozilla had been run as root.
The fix was to get rid of the file.
I will investigate how best to deal with this issue generally.
