What's wrong:
xclock now seems to ignore all attempts to specify its font
(in digital mode). Xresources and the -font swith both have
no effect on the display font.
The font(s) I try are definitly on the system and used by
other X applications (such as xterm).
The problem also exists on other linux athena 9.2 machines,
but not on suns.
