I was able to re-create this problem on my test account.
The files are available to people at /mit/jdreed/pickup/ghudson/ (because I
was talking to Greg about it). In that directory is gnome1.tar
(pre-conversion) and gnome2.tar (post-conversion) and
athena-gnome-upgrade-log.
If you're curious, feel free to take a look.
