I'm sorry. I was under the impression that this was well-known
and pseudounderstood. Perhaps Ike or someone else who's actually been
paying attention could provide more information.
My brief undersatnding is that users login on a 9.2 [linux] machine,
accept the request to do the gnome1->2 conversion, and then end up
with a misconfigured gnome panel. It is a thin panel at the top of the
screen with none of the athena customizations, and instead a foot-menu
that has some kind of default menus, including no logout button, etc.
I will try to save dotfiles and a better description when I next see it.
