For the record, I resolved the problem by reinstalling Athena. Oddly,
it seems to look for a module named
libafs-2.4.18-17.7.x.i386i386i586i586.o, so I had to make a symlink to
libafs-2.4.18-17.7.x.i586.o. But it works now. Perhaps the fact that
it failed before is the result of taking multiple updates without
rebooting in between.

It still bothers me that I managed to get the system into a state in
which regardless of which libafs/afsd I installed, and regardless of which
2.4 kernel I was running, I could not avoid the "no check server daemon
in client" error. I never figured out why this happened (I'm
thinking that it must have been something about my local configuration),
but based on the fact that it works now, it is likely not a critical
problem with the kernel module on i586.

Thanks,

Geoff
