What a stupid error. I'm familiar with dropping out of domain glue,
and have thought it a bug since I first encountered it. Until now
it has only caused an annoying delay in resolving a name.
Understanding the problem gives me the workaround: use foo.com.
instead of foo.com.
(I consider adding the default domain to a name already containing a
dot to be bad behavior, so the ndots tweak seems like the right answer.)
