Often the first attempt to resolve a hostname on a dialup fails.
The failure seems to be cached for a few seconds. After waiting,
the name can be resolved successfully for several hours (longer
than the TTL of the A record, but maybe not longer than the TTL of
the domain's NS record). I have never been able to reproduce
this behavior on a machine other than a dialup (but I rarely use
cluster suns) and `dig' directly to the MIT nameservers has never
failed me.
Just now on contents-vnder-pressvre an HTML link checker reported
seven hostname lookup failures for names which are valid, out of about
100 total names.
