configure xscreensaver via gnome control center

my previous settings were lost

My work shouldn't have been lost?
Please describe any relevant documentation references:
I had previously edited my .xscreensaver to have, as its only
screensaver, xmatrix. This was lost to me. (I had edited the programs
section so xmatrix was the only entry.) I also had a commented out line
in the programs section (which I occasionally uncommented) something I
had done to float a message around the screen. That too is gone.
Overall, the programs: section I had in .xscreensaver was completely lost.
