What's wrong:
The default environment does not come up when the home
directory is not attachable. I do not get a dash or a window
manager, just a console and an xterm with no decorations.
This appears to be specific to machines running Irix, and only
happens when the home directory is visible in Hesoid but not
attachable (e.g. because it's unmounted in AFS).
What should have happened:
dash and mwm should have started, at least.
