When we looked at this a bit more at the time, we found that -- at
least on the machine in question -- /var/athena/tmphomedir had
permissions 000, so the `temporary home directory' never actually got
created (even though the window popped up saying it was going to be,
and no errors were reported).  After fixing the permissions it worked
as expected.
